Karitane

The seaside settlement of Karitane is only 3 kms south of Waikouaiti. It is very picturesque, set in gently rolling country near the mouth of the Waikouaiti River, making it a popular holiday retreat and a much sought after place to live permanently. Karitane has a unique atmosphere, which residents are careful to maintain. Its store is the focal point of the village, and its school (Years 1-6) is also an essential community asset.

Like Waikouaiti, it has a long history of Maori occupation in pre-European times, and it boasts the Huriawa Pā, which was a major fortification set in a strong position on a rocky promontory above the coast. There is a walking track around the site.

Karitane has the advantage of a lovely sandy beach to the south-east or the sheltered bay at the mouth of the Waikouaiti River where the boaties moor their craft. Whether it is the sea air, the long history of settlement, the geography, or the community, Karitane does offer a truly special living environment.
